Award winning author Karen S. Bennett releases her new captivating novel about a wild racehorse’s tragic impact on a loving family.
Karen S. Bennett’s latest novel Beautiful Horseflesh will be released by Apprentice House in May in 2021. Bennett, a long time Baltimore resident, writes a riveting story set in Florida about a wild horse, a family and tragedy. Beautiful Horseflesh is suspenseful, shocking, and beautiful.
“This is much more than a story about a horse,” said Kevin Atticks, Apprentice House director. “It’s truly gripping.”
Avarice, deceit, and fleeing the law are the bedrock of Beautiful Horseflesh, a literary fiction set in 1999. When a Thoroughbred filly arrives at the Smitts family’s boarding and water walk farm, she is hailed by teen, Luis Smitt as, “a beautiful piece of horseflesh.” Black as satin, she is speedy and shrouded in calamity. Her handsome trainer, Bud, insists on strict privacy in preparing the horse for Tampa’s upcoming stakes race, yet finds time to flirt with both the mother and her sixteen-year-old daughter. As Luis unwraps the layers of the horses mysteries, his family’s life is irrevocably shattered. The race’s starting bells pulls the Smitt’s family forever impacted by deception, to its denouncement. Readers of dramatic fiction, with a nod to young adult readers, will enjoy watching racehorses scorch the track.
After retirement, Karen, an inveterate storyteller, sat down and wrote several novels and short stories tinged with keen observations, poignancy, and entertainment. Her first novel won first place in fiction in the Maryland Writer’s Association in 2006 with other novels placing in national competitions. Many of her short stories have been traditionally and e-published.
Beautiful Horseflesh is now available on Apprentice House, Amazon, and through your local book sellers.
