Baltimore, MD, March 26, 2024— Apprentice House Press is extremely excited to announce that its 2023 release “Self-Destruction: The Rise, Fall, and Redemption of U.S. Senator Daniel B. Brewster” by John W Frece has been selected as a finalist for Foreword’s 2023 Indies Book of the Year Awards. Foreword is dedicated to showcasing outstanding talent and skill from universities and independent publishers. Competing against 2,400 entries in 55 genres, Frece’s biography was chosen to move forward in the history category. The winners, selected by teams of librarian and bookseller judges nationwide, will be announced in June 2024.
“Self Destruction” follows the true story of the rise and fall of Daniel B. Brewster, once the “Golden Boy of Maryland Politics,” who saw his life unravel due to alcoholism, scandal, financial ruin, and divorce. Despite an auspicious beginning highlighted by military valor in World War II and a seat in the Senate, Brewster’s self-destruction took hold. However, Brewster’s story took a turn as he confronted his alcoholism, rebuilt his life, and found redemption through sobriety, a new marriage, and a commitment to helping others in recovery. This heroic journey highlights resilience and a personal transformation that makes for an inspiring page-turner which can be purchased here.
“Self Destruction” is the fourth book by John W. Frece, a former Maryland State House bureau chief for UPI and the Baltimore Sun. He previously co-authored the autobiographies of Senator Joseph D. Tydings and Governor Harry R. Hughes, both of Maryland. As a former gubernatorial aide, Frece also wrote an insider’s description of the internal political machinations surrounding the passage of Maryland Governor Parris N. Glendening’s controversial land use program, Smart Growth.
