As I boy growing up, even having witnessed my father’s incredible sense of the importance of relationships as I observed and heard stories of the real estate business he started with his brother, I never thought this would be my life’s course. Although I was a people person, I thought the business world was only about crunching numbers. It wasn’t until the summer before graduating college, with a degree in early childhood education, that this perspective changed as I became a summer intern for the family business and saw it so much more than I had originally imagined. The Inside Out Company: Putting Purpose and People First is a provocative challenge for leaders of every industry. Operating from the inside out is a simple but radical shift in thinking from the commonly accepted top-down leadership models that exist in the business world. Through genuine listening and deep-rooted appreciation, inside out leadership is transformational to both company culture and the communities they serve because it seeks to connect and empower people as stakeholders in the success of a singular purpose.

Donald Manekin has worked on community-focused real estate development, civic leadership and philanthropic missions in the Baltimore-Washington region for more than four decades. He learned the real estate business from his father, Harold Manekin, co-founder of the Manekin Corporation. Donald opened the company’s first satellite office in fast-growing Howard County in 1979. At Donald’s direction as partner and senior vice president of Manekin, the company developed a team-oriented approach to real estate development.

“For years, I envisioned what the journey of a social entrepreneur would look like. The Inside Out Company not only crystalized that vision for me but also provided a clear roadmap to guide me along the path. The greatest benefit I received was the affirmation that my thoughts and beliefs are not unique. Businesses that balance bottom line thinking and “human-centered” approaches are best position to create the impact we desperately need in a capitalist driven society. I highly encourage this book for people looking for a “new” way to do business. You will find that business as usual does not have to be the norm.”
