Apprentice House Press has released a poetry collection by author Kashiana Singh titled, Woman by the Door.
This collection digs deep into the author’s personal journey to draw out poetry that then forms a bridge to broader narratives. That could be an intergenerational story, homage to everyday relationships, linkages to geographical transitions, dialogues about social issues, revelations of loss, all bearing a refrain of the ever-evolving self.
Poetry does not change or transform; it just opens doorways that allow us to enter our own and others’ dormant experiences. As Joy Harjo says “Every soul has a distinct song”. “I discovered mine during the process of amalgamating this collection,” says Kashiana.
The Woman by the Door invites us to explore themes of family, grief, and home while also navigating topics like the pandemic, rape, rituals. The universal and the personal, the micro and the macro, the home, and her home pervade Singh’s writing. The book is a ‘portal’ that summons and reveals, it offers a quiet introspection of memory as well as is vulnerable in its a discourse with loss, each poem a witness to the spirit. “I wish to leave the reader with both poignancy and prayer.” said author Kashiana Singh.
Women by the Door is available wherever books are sold, including in our shop.
